She has revealed she will confess to drug trafficking as part of a deal that could see her walk free from jail in less than three years. The two women were escorted out of the prison where they are being held during their trial and were led into a prison van by armed guards. They were transporte...

Whatever the case, when grievances can’t be settled between the two parties in question they turn to the courts, complete with judges and juries, in order to settle the issue once and for all. For the most part, these types of lawsuits often get overshadowed by the ‘bigger’ stories involving cases of murderers and other serious crimes. That said, there are quite a few interesting non-criminal suits brought forward in the last few years which are pretty bizarre. How bizarre? Well, if we’re being honest these following lawsuits are just plain ridiculous. In fact, they are so frivolous or litigious that sitcoms and late night comedians have even referenced some. From cases of mistaken identity to lost or damaged personal property to cases which are just clearly the effort of the plaintiff to get a big payday, every one of these lawsuits is so ridiculous it’s hard not to follow them without laughing out loud or just shaking your head in disbelief. In fact, some of these cases have even spurred efforts to reform the legal system in order to stop so many frivolous and clearly stupid lawsuits from taking up the time of the courts. Various of Montesinos with ex-President Alberto Fujimori and others at news conference in presidential palace STORYLINE: Former Peruvian spymaster Vladimiro Montesinos was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison on Thursday for masterminding a deal that parachute-dropped 10,000 assault rifles to Colombian leftist guerrillas seven years ago. Montesinos appeared impassive as the court tribunal, led by Judge Ines Villa Bonilla, meted out the sentence, closing a nearly three-year trial that has heard testimony resembling a spy thriller. The verdict was rendered after nearly 10 hours of court clerks reciting the facts of the case for the record. The court ordered 61-year-old Montesinos to pay a fine of 3.1 (m) million US dollars to the governments of Peru and Colombia to split between them. Montesinos told the judges he plans to appeal. Men working for Montesinos posed as Peruvian military representatives to purchase Soviet-era assault rifles from Jordan that were delivered in 1999 to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, the court ruled. Montesinos is already serving a 15-year term on about a dozen corruption convictions, which under Peruvian law are served concurrently. This latest sentence adds five years to his prison time. Counting time served, he is now scheduled for release on 17 March 17 2023 - just before his 78th birthday - the court indicated. He faces a possible 35-year sentence in another trial for allegedly directing a paramilitary death squad during the first half of ex-President Alberto Fujimori's 10-year autocratic government. Other trials are ongoing or have yet to begin. Montesinos - who during the 1990s gained control of Peru's military, the courts, and most media outlets - maintained throughout the trial that he had nothing to do with the arms deal and that he was the one responsible for uncovering the scheme. Testimony from Montesinos' 18 co-defendants - most of whom received sentences ranging from 6 to 15 years - overwhelmingly fingered him as the leader of the plot. Montesinos' influence permeated a nation already weakened by chronic corruption - until Fujimori's regime collapsed in November 2000 amid a bribery scandal involving his spymaster. The arms scandal came to light three months earlier when Montesinos made a rare public appearance with Fujimori to announce that Peruvian authorities had broken a gun-running ring led by brothers Jose Luis and Luis Frank Aybar, both Peruvian army veterans. Spanish/Nat A broad amnesty law for military officers convicted of human rights abuses and other crimes has caused an outrage in Peru. Scores of army and police officers are benefiting from the amnesty, which covers crimes committed during the last 15 years. But the law has also benefited some of President Alberto Fujimori's worst political enemies. This is the end of what was supposed to be a 10-year sentence for rebel Army General Jaime Salinas, the leader of the 13 November 1995 coup attempt that tried to topple President Alberto Fujimori's government. Salinas is one of many military and police officials who are being released after Fujimori enacted a broad amnesty law. After his release from jail Salinas asked Peruvians to forgive and forget. SOUNDBITE: (In Spanish) "We want to look ahead only. What is gone is gone and should be forgotten. What Peru needs is that all Peruvians look ahead and not dig out dirt so this or that person can be blamed." SUPER CAPTION: General Jaime Salinas, leader of 1992 failed army coup The law enacted on 15 June is also freeing dozens of officers convicted of committing atrocities during Peru's insurgency war between the armed forces and the Shining Path guerrilla movement. Human rights groups and relatives of the victims are outraged by the law and are calling for it to be nullified. Some of the relatives fear for their lives if death squad members are released. The government decided to take this initiative amid deep discontent in the armed forces that so many officers convicted of human rights abuses were serving time in prison. Some observers did not rule out that the unrest in the barracks could lead to an armed insurrection. But the lawyer of Jaime Salinas believes his client and the rest of the officers are heroes. SOUNDBITE: (In Spanish) "I had the huge privilege to serve as the lawyer of Jaime Salinas, who is a 'giant' in the Peruvian public scene. Because of this country's frivolity and because of the immorality of its politicians, Peru needed someone to stir up things as Jaime Salinas and the rest of the men who have been freed did." SUPER CAPTION: Javier Valle Riestra, Jaime Salinas' Lawyer Salinas had completed two and a half years of his sentence in the El Callao Military Prison of Real Felipe. And today he does not rule out a future in politics. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Guzman was known to his followers as "Presidente Gonzalo," inspiring a cult like obedience among a Maoist guerrilla insurgency that grew to 10-thousand armed fighters. Guzman did not flinch as the court clerk declared him guilty of "aggravated terrorism" against the Peruvian state shortly after 8 pm (0100 GMT), following a more than six-hour recitation of the trial evidence. He refused last month to speak in his own defence when offered a final chance during closing arguments to address the court. He has said very little during the course of the trial. "I am a revolutionary combatant and totally reject being a terrorist," Guzman declared as the trial, his third, began last year at the maximum-security naval base where he has been held since 1993. A secret military tribunal sentenced Guzman to life in prison in 1992, shortly after his capture in a Lima safehouse. But three years ago, Peru's top court ruled the closed military justice system unconstitutional. A civilian retrial in late 2004 ended in chaos after Guzman and his supporters, with fists raised, chanted communist slogans as television cameras rolled, and two of the three presiding judges stepped down under pressure over conflicts of interest. Another civilian tribunal, led by Judge Pablo Talavera, president of Peru's national anti-terrorism court, started the third trial in September 2005. During the last year, Talavera banned cameras from the courtroom to prevent more political theatre, a policy he lifted for the first time on Friday, allowing Peru's cable news station Canal N to tap into a closed circuit TV system to broadcast Guzman's sentence live. Two British women arrested in Peru last month over accusations of drug smuggling were taken to a court hearing on Tuesday where they are expected to be questioned by a judge. Michaella McCollum, 20, and Melissa Reid, 19, were caught trying to board a flight to Spain with 24 pounds (11 kilos) of cocaine in their luggage. They face drug-trafficking charges and could face up to 15 years in prison. Reid is expected to plead guilty in front of the judge on Tuesday in return for a shorter sentence. She has revealed she will confess to drug trafficking as part of a deal that could see her walk free from jail in less than three years. The two women were escorted out of the prison where they are being held during their trial and were led into a prison van by armed guards. They were transported to the hearing at Callao prison. Callao is next to Lima where the international airport is located. Arriving at the court hearing at Callao prison, the lawyer for the two women said he was barred by law from making any statements on the case until after sentencing. Prosecutor Juan Bautista Mendoza, who is handling the case, said last week that the women face a minimum of six years and eight months in prison with no eligibility for parole if they plead guilty. He added that a further sentence reduction is possible if the women cooperate as witnesses against co-conspirators. Mendoza said that if both women plead guilty they could be sentenced to prison in less than a month's time. He said otherwise their trial could last six months. The prosecutor said a new law enacted two weeks after the women's arrest eliminated sentence reductions for good behaviour for people convicted of drug trafficking. Previously, parole was possible after 32 months for drug couriers who pleaded guilty. After their August 6 arrest, a lawyer for McCollum claimed that the pair were coerced with threats of violence by a gang of up to 15 armed men, some of whom trailed them to Peru from Spain. According to Peru's national prisons institute, 90 percent of the 1,648 foreigners in the country's prisons are either sentenced or awaiting trial for drug trafficking. Recently involved in a car accident? Personal injury claims filed after being struck by a reckless driver can quickly become a very complex ordeal. There are many different types of financial compensation that you might be rightfully owed if you have been injured, including some more obvious things like ambulance fees, immediate hospital costs, missed wages and punitive damages. However, it can be easy to overlook things like compensation for losing the ability to enjoy everyday activities due to severe prolonged pain, the costs associated with long-term care and even wrongful death if it’s applicable to your situation.
